Small Business Week 3: Politics

About half of the San Francisco Supervisors, including Jake McGoldrick (above), showed up and either chowed down or pontificated at the podium on the stairs.

The speeches were mercifully brief...

...though the emcee was Jordanna Thigpen (above), who according to my friend h. Brown is one of the loathsome characters in local San Francisco politics, where there is some serious competition.

Mayor Gavin Newsom gave his usual boilerplate litany of cliches...

...and made sure he didn't forget to use the word "diversity" while he punctuated his banalities with lots of finger-pointing and hand action.

Then there were the presentation of awards to various small businesses...

...with Supervisor Daly (above) giving a short, gracious speech...

...and the father-and-son duo of Dave Karp (age 91) and Rick Carp (both are above) receiving the "Family-Owned Business of the Year" for Cole Hardware.

In a bit of irony, they were followed by Supervisor Maxwell (above), who worked for years to locate a controversial Home Depot superstore in an area that would have knocked out quite a few small businesses like Cole Hardware, but I suppose consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds. Still, I'm happy that the economy has crashed for no other reason that it recently caused Home Depot to give up on their obnoxious big box store.

Most loathsome? Dearest Mike, we need evidence. That's a coveted prize and shouldn't be handed out just on the say-so of any one person.

Dear matty: You're absolutely correct so I've gone back and added the qualifier "one of the most loathsome." Supervisor Michaela Pier-Alioto, for one, shouldn't get off that easily.
