Dia de Los Muertos at the SF Symphony 1: Lobby
The fifth annual Dia de los Muertos concert took place at Davies Hall last Saturday afternoon...
...and the event seems to get more ambitious with each edition.
On the main floor lobby there were Aztec dancers...
...flanking a series of altars dedicated to various souls such as the great, recently deceased singer Chavela Vargas above, who was sort of the Mexican k.d. lang decades before that Canadian lesbian started singing country songs.
On the second floor there were a pair of senior choruses from the Community Music Center singing Spanish language songs...
...while being energetically conducted by Lichi Fuentes.
Across the way, there was a "Frida Tableau"...
...with music being provided by the woman above.
On the third floor, I insisted on getting half my face painted just to get in the mood for the concert, and had anxious parents at intermission wanting to know if their child could get the same treatment, but it was too late. If you ever attend this event, be sure to arrive an hour early for the extra entertainment and hot chocolate with pan de muerto.

The half and half is much scarier. Excellent choice.
