The Atheists Strike Back

Near a freeway exit at 5th and Harrison in San Francisco's South of Market neighborhood, a billboard has gone up to counter messages that have proliferated recently around the world proclaiming May 21st as Biblical "Judgment Day."

One of the oddest details is that both the Christian crackpot, Dr. Harold Camping and the Atheist sponsors of the billboard above are both based in Oakland, a place that most San Franciscans never even think about. It feels like a holy war being fought on proxy ground, with TJ MAXX going to the victor.

Hey, buddy! I live in Oaktown. I know you think about it once in a while because you'll send me an e-mail or call me out of the blue.

Okay, I'm just being huffy. I get your point.

Dear Matty: When that happens, I'm thinking of you, not of Oaktown. Still, I'm fascinated that you seem to be at the heart of a Major Religious Conflict. You should go cover both groups for your blog around May 21st-22nd.

That's a good idea! It's a Friday/Saturday/Sunday situation, so I should have plenty of time. I have a friend who's involved in the local atheist scene, so I might have an in.

Dear Matty: You're a serious journalist, dude. Ask for full press credentials, and send them links to your site and mine. I'll be spending May 22nd (if we haven't Raptured) at Lake Chabot Golf Course for my birthday party.
