The Art of Seeing

One of San Francisco's best annual art shows opened on October 2nd in City Hall's basement for two months.

"Insights 2008" is a nationally juried exhibition of 45 artists curated by the Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired, which is next door on Van Ness Avenue.

The artists range from totally blind to "legally" blind, with plenty of variations.

Some of the artists are only able to see colors while others discern only shapes.

What comes across most powerfully every year is how much these artists are focused on the simple act of seeing...

...and sharing their visions is very much a part of that identity.

There's an opening reception on Tuesday, October 21st from 5:30 to 7:30 PM which is usually a fascinating affair that includes most of the artists in person. Check it out.

SFMike -- Thanks for this. My favorite is the three little pigs and the American flag made out of bacon. Way cool!

When you have a chance, please weigh in at Astrology Mundo on California's cash shortfall. I need some reality-based insight into the fiscal crisis. -- Monica

Fabulous post - I'm going to "pimp" you over at Chez Namastenancy. For all Kenneth Baker's pretentions, I don't think he's ever reviewed this.

These are just breath-taking -- will have to get over there. Might learn something about blindness.
