Labor Day Weekend 2001 seemed to be full of mayhem, including an argument between the San Francisco Police and the San Francisco Fire Department over who was responsible for a belligerent chronic drunk making a spectacle of himself in the Castro District.
There was also a young man who discovered his stolen bike at Church and Market and who engaged in a public brawl with the thief...

Dear Donald: Yeah, it was Jonathan Livingston Seagullish, wasn't it? And did Pauline Kael use lots of ellipses? I don't even remember that detail about her writing.
Oh Lord, one Xmas someone gave me a copy of J.L.Seagull. My cousin, my same age, belittled me for actually liking the book. Hell, I thought the book was cute...
Anyway, when we think of "three dot journalism" we of course think of it's originator -- Herb Caen -- but that was mostly just to divide his segments. But Pauline Kael was sometimes criticized for her for overuse of ...ellipses. English language frowns on the overuse of ...ellipses, so I'm told...
Of course, I am a total abuser of ellipses -- I use them to put space between my sentences... Of course, I don't use them when I'm writing a formal letter, but otherwise, I use ellipses a lot... My periods are usually always ellipses...
Dear Donald: I think it was Walter Winchell in New York who was the model for Herb Caen and the rat-a-tat use of ellipses in a gossip column. Pauline's prose style is similarly punchy and funny and deeply informed, but it has something else which is an interesting mind simply roaming. Her essays/reviews are aging really well.
