The Joy of Amtrak

I traveled south on the Coast Stairlight Amtrak train last Thursday.

The rail line from Seattle to Los Angeles has been notoriously late and unreliable for decades...

...but on Thursday the train was actually early into the station at Oakland, which points to either serendipity or a serious improvement in service, or both.

California is subsidizing Amtrak's in-state rail and feeder bus system, which makes for low fares ($40 from Oakland to SLO).

Maybe some of those high-speed rail billions could be diverted into improving the existing infrastructure...

...which rolls beside the Monterey estuary...

...as you point out the sights to young Australian backpackers.

Nice to see the train ride reviewed. I have taken the train from Oakland to Seattle and from Oakland to LA. I really enjoyed both trips. I love trains. Nice pics.

Make me homesick for that particular California gold.
