Somebody should produce yet another remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, except in this updated version there are no spores or plant pods taking over people's bodies. Instead, aliens rewire everyone's brains through mobile devices.
On buses and trains I often watch dumbfounded as everyone surrounding me retreats into their private digital worlds while in a public setting. It's spooky.

It is crazy, isn't it? No one (or at least, very few people) pay attention to anything but their phones any more. Have we really forgotten how to engage with each other over a meal, etc.?
Yikes!
Dear Rachel: It is very weird. I decided to opt out of having a mobile device, partly because I would soon be as addicted as everyone else, and it's fascinating to watch the normalization of all this alienated public behavior from the sidelines. By the way, finally put up your Fog Cit Notes site on the blogroll. Glad you're still writing it.
Aw, thanks, Michael.
And yeah, I agree about the weirdness of mobile devices - I try to keep my phone in my bag unless I'm waiting for someone, or something like that.
