The Wicked Witches of City Hall

San Francisco's City hall has been lit up green for the last couple of evenings...

...which looks more Wicked Witch of the West than Emerald City.

I presume it's to celebrate the return of a roadshow version of the Broadway musical "Wicked." However, it could just be a spontaneous eruption of visible evil a la "Ghostbusters 2."

It could be the city's visible display of their commitment to more environmentally conscious practices, shown here by wasting a lot of energy created by coal and petroleum burning plants.

Perhaps related to the evil re-design of the SF Chron? I like to be constructive in my criticism and supportive of my profession, but with this I don't know where to begin. It looks like a huge version of one of those clumsy info-mercial ads. (I know, I know.) They must have searched far and wide to find someone so insensitive to letterforms. It is painful to behold. A subversive attempt to get all subscriptions cancelled, deflect all newsstand sales and go 100% on line?

Dear ellen: Haven't seen the new Chronicle design yet but I'll trust your professional graphics judgment completely. Can't wait to see the disaster for myself.

Trust me, the new Chronicle is a design disaster. It looks worse than the newspaper that I worked for back in the 60's, in high school, in Florida no less. What ARE they thinking?
