Board of Supervisors 3: Party in The Halls

After David Chiu's surprise victory as the new Board of Supervisors president and a long succession of self-congratulatory speeches by all the supervisors...

...a party broke out in the hallway outside of the chambers...

...with about half of the supervisors, such as Eric Mar above, hosting open houses in their offices.

John Avalos (above) was being interviewed by the press, and he looked a bit relieved not to have been chosen President.

Steven Jones (above left) from the weekly "Bay Guardian" was interviewing an exultant Chris Daly on why the Guardian's choice of Mirkarimi for president hadn't gone as planned.

Local lunatic Frank Chu was nursing a drink without his usual paranoid signage in hand...

...while Sean Elsbernd was hosting an open house in his office for what looked like all white people.

Bevan Dufty has snagged the most sumptuous supervisorial office on the corner of McAllister and Van Ness, which until recently housed Tom Ammiano. There were a bunch of old City Hall power brokers wandering through the office while Sophie Maxwell's pretty office (below) was nearly empty.

I guess her partnership with the "right-leaning" side didn't go over so well with her colleagues or constituents.

daly really doesn't like ross , does he? so strange.

david chiu is a nice guy though. he's one of the few electeds who doesn't drive a car, and relies on MUNI and a bike to get around. to me that says a lot.

It is strange, isn't it? Daly and Mirkarimi are complete egomaniacs (it goes with the territory), but I like them both. I think Daly just got hung out to dry by himself one too many times without any support from Mirkarimi, and this was payback time, as Peskin would have put it.

I also think how it worked out was great. The new quartet of young supervisors (they're all in their 30s) are bringing in some smart energy and I'm glad it's one of them heading the field right now rather than one of the other old hacks (fill in your own names). It's also a seismic shift for Asian-Americans in this city though that's not being much acknowledged in our gringo-centric media.

Plus, Daly's former aide Avalos just got elected and placed in charge of the Budget Committee by Chiu, which is great because Avalos did most of the legwork for Daly when he was on the Budget committee, so he knows the turf and the complexities.

Dear affinity: Thanks for the thanks. Great to have you as a fan.

I'm just happy that Ross jump the fence and Make Maxwell board prez. I'm happy to know Ross is more man than that. I will say that I was worried there for a minute. Now lets hope that Maxwell doesn't go to much further to the right than she already has.

Thanks for pointing out the appointed-incumbency of 3 out of 5 Newsom/Maxwell supporters.

End appointed incumbency for supervisors!

I've been wondering how long it would be before more Chinese-Americans moved into the power seats, given their increasing presence in the city. Now, it will be interesting to see what ensues- will things remain the same, go left, go right or just go wherever.
