Free Sunday at the Asian 1: Mass Appeal

On the first Sunday of each month, the Asian Art Museum offers free admission to the museum...

...with a small $5 surcharge if you want to see traveling exhibits like Majaraja, with its solid silver coach, before it leaves tomorrow, April 8th.

Though the line outside was a bit long...

...the museum itself didn't feel particularly crowded...

...and it was fun to mingle with a wide array of characters who didn't look like they usually spent much time in museums.

The Asian should consider making free Sunday admission a weekly event, like the Palm Springs Art Museum does every Thursday evening during their nearby weekly street fair.

It was fun seeing whole families tearing around the place, and the added revenue from the cafe and gift shop alone would help cover the costs. Offering free weekly Sunday admission would also help interested people get into the habit of going to the museum regularly, which would probably lead to increased membership, and so on. It's certainly worth a try.
