Vacation with a Bulldog

I've only been at the blog for four days and I'm already going on vacation, visiting family on the Central Coast near San Luis Obispo. Hey, it's not like I'm getting paid for this or anything.

In the interim, you might want to check out my favorite political writer in San Francisco, h. brown.

Also, be sure to check out his archives, which don't take that long to read. By the end, you will know just about everything there is to know about who runs San Francisco, how and why. It's not a particularly pretty picture, but in Mr. Brown's hands it's wildly entertaining. h. is also self-employed (in other words, broke) so he has quite a different take on things than the political columnists for the billionare publishers of the Chronicle and the Examiner.

In his latest post, this is his take on mayor Gavin Newsom the Environmentalist.

World Environment day

When the Newsom camp needs a turnout, they go to the same source Willie Brown always tapped. They go to City employees, either regular or those engaged with the non-profits. People on the City clock came by the hundreds to cheer the mayor and a hundred or so junketeers from as near as Oakland and as far away as China. The crowd cheered as the mayor who killed tidal energy and refuses to spend voter approved bond money on solar power projects preached to them about what an environmentalist he is. Get this straight and get this completely: Gavin Newsom is a PG&E hack and always will be. Absolutely no meaningful alternative energy projects will happen on his watch. Note that the first thing the boy 'environmentalist' did when he took office was allow PG&E lobbyist, Eric Jaye (also Gavin's chief campaign consultant) to fire SFPUC alternative energy czar, Ed Smeloff and hire a drab little crone/drone (what the hell's her name? she could put a rock to sleep) brought her in to gum up all interchanges with Lafco and the Board of supes.

Bottom line, Newsom's people don't give a shit about any of the environment beyond the walls of their estates and neither does he.

Just got back from visiting family in Arroyo Grande my own self. Have fun.

Dear Gordon: Actually, the pretty picture above is from my sister's house in Arroyo Grande. Another sister owns Gina's, a restaurant on Grand Avenue in the "historic village" of AG. By the way, the weather has been freakishly beautiful down here rather than the usual subzero winds and fog.

Today we're moving over to Pismo, where "Bakersfield goes to the beach." All the Central Valley trash has been helping to keep this area from becoming the next Carmel/Monterey, although it's just a matter of time before the place is only going to be for wealthy people.
