As part of its 50 year anniversary celebrations, the San Francisco Asian Art Museum is hosting Emperor's Treasures, a special exhibit all summer consisting of loans from the National Palace Museum in Taipei, Taiwan.
Today was Free Day at the museum which takes place on the first Sunday of every month, and the entrance line this morning stretched all the way around the block.
It looked as if the entire Taiwanese diaspora living in the Bay Area showed up, and since the queue was inching along at a snail's pace, I decided to wait to be taken to the museum later this summer by my friend James Parr, who can explain it all to me.
I thought that the pork belly stone was over hyped and while the show contains some lovely work, I didn't find it any better than the work in the Asian's permanent collection. I suspect that the show is more about behind the scenes politics than it is with sharing even a fraction of the thousands of pieces in the National Museum in Taiwan.
I shared this on Facebook with a friend who lives and teaches in Taiwan. Would love to see this exhibit myself!

ReplyDeleteDear Nancy: Reading between the lines of various accounts of the show, I believe you. Thanks for the confirmation.
