76 Is On Your Side

A strange billboard for the 76 brand of gasoline has appeared on a rooftop near the intersection of Polk and Clay Streets in San Francisco.

It hints that "Maybe there's a cop behind this billboard, maybe there's not," which is logistically impossible unless the San Francisco Police Department is now hiring snipers with radar guns to monitor traffic from rooftops. Since San Francisco police can't be bothered to combat drivers at street level who try to run over pedestrians in crosswalks on a daily basis, this doesn't seem likely.

After the Big Brotherish line, "(We'd slow down just in case.)", there's a smaller corporate tagline, "We're on the driver's side" which is possibly more insane. The oil conglomerates have demonstrated repeatedly that they're not on the human race's side, let alone the driver's. If ever there was a billboard crying out for a few addendums from the Billboard Liberation Front, this is it.

  2. Dear audreyln: You're absolutely correct, and I've changed the text and header accordingly. Thanks for the heads up.

Here's what the Wikipedia has to say:

"76 (formerly Union 76) is a chain of gas stations located within the United States. The 76 brand is owned by ConocoPhillips. Union Oil Company of California, dba Unocal, the original owner and creator of the Union 76 brand merged with Chevron Corporation in 2005.

In 1997, Unocal sold its western United States refining and marketing operations and the rights to the Union 76 brand for use in refining and marketing operations to Tosco Corporation. Tosco has since been purchased by Phillips Petroleum, which merged with Conoco to form ConocoPhillips. Unocal continued to own the "76" trademark for use in its operations, with the exception of the divested Refining and Marketing business. On August 10, 2005, Unocal Corporation and Union Oil Company of California were acquired and merged into a subsidiary of Chevron Corporation."
