Vice Palace

San Francisco City Hall was lit red on Wednesday night for World AIDS Day. The effect was somewhat frightening, as if the building was proclaiming itself as the center for all vice and corruption.

In related cultural news, the Thrillpeddlers have announced yet another extension of the Cockettes musical "Pearls Over Shanghai" until April 9, 2011, making this almost a two-year run. They will be taking a holiday break from December 19th to January 22nd, and then play every weekend through April.

This will be followed by a new production of the Cockettes' last musical, "Vice Palace," which is a mashup of "La Dolce Vita" and "The Masque of the Red Death," with new songs written for the occasion by Scrumbly Koldewyn, the original composer. There was a preview of the show during the second half of the too-short run of "Hot Greeks" earlier this year, and it looked both funny and very disturbing, particularly in light of the subsequent AIDS plague.
