Pagan Transylvanian Unitarians
Though the title of this post looks like rampant, weird Google-baiting, it is actually well earned. The very concrete First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco church at Franklin and Geary has been kindly donating space for a number of week-long classes for the U.S. Census Bureau recently.
While wandering the halls last week during training, I ran across two juxtaposed bulletin boards. The first was describing the Transylvania Partner Church with maps and photos and letters. Directly across the hall from it was the Pagan Interest Circle bulletin board with garlands of faux flowers, pagan calendars and event announcements.
"Nobody could make this up," I thought.

It may not surprise you to learn that I have a friend who just graduated from Starr King, the Unitarian seminary in Berkeley, who is currently visiting comrades in faith in Transylvania. Really. :-)
I was going to point out that there are Unitarian churches in Transylvania but I see that Janinsanfran has beat me to it. Now, don't go disin' the pagans at the church - a couple of them are friends of mine and they will put the mean mojo on you. Or, at least, try. I used to be with a WICCA group and some of them also ended up at the Unitarian church. But that's another "only in SF" kind of story. But having the IRS have classes there is the strangest part of the story - from evil Amerikan government to Earth worshiping pagans, all under the same roof.
Hi Michael:
I really enjoy reading your blog! I've been involved with the Unitarian fellowships here in the Bay area for several years now in various ways---they are one of the few churches I enjoy going to for their progressive approach and social justice work. Anyway, miss you and your interesting commentary and sense of humour at the CB so much! Please send me your email addrs. & best contact #. I have some things I want to talk to you about!
Cheers,
Lori Higa
Dear Lori: Will do.
Dear Nancy: It's the Commerce Department, not the IRS that runs the Census Bureau. Not sure which one is more evil.
