The Decay of The Upper Crust

The sycamores in front of San Francisco's City Hall have received their pruning on one side of the plaza but not the other.

Under the newly poodle cut trees, the San Francisco Art Commission signage for Patrick Dougherty's "The Upper Crust" is decaying badly...

...but the willow sapling sculptures have survived quite beautifully.

The Art Commission has decided to keep the sculptures up until their one-year anniversary in February when they will be destroyed. If you're interested in photography, I highly recommend playing around this site over the next three months.

  1. That big one day storm did major havoc to the palm trees near where I live, but the twigs pulled through like champs. Nice work, twig guy!

  2. Last year I was watching the tree pruners at their work -- it was a Sunday morning and I realized that they just might be getting paid overtime at a time when the City was as broke as ever... I walked by their impressive trucks -- very beefy and nice... Extremely capable of going after all that messy growth, bucket arm and all...

  3. Dear Donald: Why do you think San Francisco has a $7 billion annual budget with only about 700,000 people? There is so much municipal waste and graft in this city it's sometimes mind-boggling to witness.
