Palms in the Springs

There was a serious question whether or not we would be able to stand the heat of Palm Springs in the summer, where the highs tend to be above 110 degrees...

...but the place turns out to be remarkably bearable because of the low humidity...

...and the nights are beautiful...

...especially lolling about a swimming pool...

...watching jet trails streak through the palm trees while thinking about poor, shivering San Franciscans.

  1. I was totally groovin' on this blog until the last sentence below the last gorgeous photo.

    Bitch! LOL!

  2. Dear whabbear: Extreme envy was the reaction I was aiming for, so I cannot thank you enough for calling me a "Bitch!" It really is insanely beautiful down here right now.

  3. Glad you're having a fine time, but I can almost guarantee that the novelty will wear off soon... Looks like a nice place, but I, for one, wouldn't want to live there...

"It's a dry heat" -- yeah, right, I've heard that one before...

It got so bloody hot yesterday here in Marin (maybe a whopping 80) that I had to buzz down to Rodeo Beach to cool off... Did the trick...

The nights are bautiful, and just a few miles from the towns there's amazing visibility. BILLions and BILLions of stars (well, THOUSands, anyway) and if you see a light in the distance it may be forty or fifty miles away. Open desert can be scary--Arizona used to post pix of the desiccated corpses of drivers who tried walking from their broken-down cars in search of help--but unlike high mountain country I've never found it oppressive to the spirit.

  5. Dear rootless: It's been a complete surprise how much I like the desert, and I share a similar feeling of "oppressive to the spirit" in high mountains. A lot of people feel exactly the opposite.
