We Have The Moon and The Stars

We went to Palm Springs over the Thanksgiving holidays and the night skies were extraordinary, highlighted by the rare conjunction of a brightly shining Venus, Jupiter and a crescent moon on Monday night.

It was enough to make one reconsider astrology.

  1. Lucky you to see that so clearly! I love looking at our skies at night; the only reason I'd want to live out of the city - and in a rural isolated place- is to see the heavens spread above me in all their glory. Well, other reasons for living outside of SF include a more affordable (if boring) life style, clean air and no noisy neighbors.

  2. Great pictures! Did you manage that with a digital camera? If so, please tell us not-so-accomplished picture takers how to do it...

  3. I saw Venus and Jupiter blazing at twilight here in Oakland, even through all the haze and light pollution. Very beautiful even here, but a palm tree makes it nicer.

  4. Dear Kit: It's just an old Sony digital camera, and I amped up the lighting slightly in Photoshop so that you could see the dusk. Otherwise, it didn't strike me as that tricky a shot. Plus, as far as I'm concerned, you're a better photographer than me.

Dear Matty and Nancy: Palm trees and no ambient light really did make it look like a nativity scene from a Biblical epic.

  5. You're way too kind, Mike...I'm truly not a photographer, and I've never used Photoshop. But for the first time ever, I want to try. I think it's time to break out the tripod, too...
