Victory Garden Community Day

The Slow Food Nation people have decided to put on a trio of "Community Days" at the Victory Garden in Civic Center Plaza (click here) which on Saturday included entertainment.

Not many people showed up for the event...

...and my favorite sight was the little boy who much preferred playing with the water cans and gardening tools than watching what looked to be a very dreary puppet show.

  1. I may have unknowingly crossed paths with you. I visited the Asian Art Museum across the street that afternoon & also stopped to check out this urban garden thing. I saw the puppet show going on. There was a volunteer that explained the concept to me & my friend. It was a little disturbing to hear him talk about victory gardens. It's like we're going to bring back victory gardens, bread lines & the National Recovery Administration.

  2. Did you see the article in today's paper about how much it's costing to guard these little patches of vegetables? $3400 a week! That's money that could be much better spent - how about starting with an after-hours school program for kids in the Tenderloin?

  3. Dear Nancy: I did see the snarky Matier & Ross item and there was a quote from somebody that the garden needed to be guarded because otherwise "it would turn into a toilet."

My question is, why would the garden turn into a toilet any more than the surrounding lawns on Civic Center Plaza or along the sidewalks where I happen to live? And the real question is why aren't there decent public washrooms for EVERYONE in the area, that even included showers so the down and out can clean up? No, we have to spend the money building a phony "victory garden" for Alice Waters and Gavin Newsom. It's sort of disgusting, to tell you the truth.

  4. I agree totally - disgusting and elitist. But then, that's what SF has turned into and it makes me angry.
