Fire Island Ferry
On Saturday afternoon, while staying with an old friend who lives in Islip, Long Island...
...we drove to the town of Sayville...
...and parked in a secret parking lot for Islip township residents...
...at the ferry landing for the Fire island community of Cherry Grove.
Though the sexual preference demographics have changed over the last couple of decades, inching more towards the heterosexual end of the spectrum, there are still plenty of classic old homos who call the place their own...
...and the beach was filled with a huge group of lesbians...
...who were playing dodgeball.
We headed east for the less populated nudie beach between Cherry Grove and The Pines...
...and bodysurfed in the warm, gorgeous Atlantic.
We didn't stay for the Lesbian Dodgeball After-Party at Cherry's on Long Island Bay...
...but headed back to Long Island at sunset...
...passing the legendary Belvedere guest house, which is sort of a gay male Madonna Inn. I booked a room for later in the week because there really is nothing like the place on earth.
Ah, the Sayville ferry terminal. Brings back memories. Fire Island was much like New York City, in which there are a number of essentially segregated "neighborhoods," with the western end being rather working class, the middle being fairly well-to-do and straight, and the east end being "gay" -- interesting to hear that maybe that's changing.
ReplyDeleteBest bit about Fire Island? There's a school bus for the kids, and it picks them up along the beach, since that's the only real road. Must be so neat to wait for the school bus on the beach!
Nice digs! Hope you are having fun.
ReplyDeleteMike, you lucky guy! Fabulous photos as usual - enjoy yourself (as if you need me to tell you that). Come back relaxed and happy and let's "do" lunch and swap vacation stories.
