The Wolfman of Wartburg

The reactions to San Francisco Opera's new production of Wagner's "Tannhauser" (click here) have been all over the map, with a few critics praising it to the skies, while most of the other critics are subjecting the High Concept production to various forms of ridicule. (Click here for Sid Chan's silent-film version and click here for Tom Reed's fractured flickers version.) What everyone seems to agree on is that Peter Seiffert as Tannhauser is magnificent, singing the brutally difficult role with beauty and reserves of power to spare.

What is also beyond dispute is that my costume, with its layers of rough wool and soft leather, is probably the butchest thing I'll be wearing in my life, and that the dead wolf around my neck has to be the coolest prop ever. If you've never seen the opera, there are two more performances this Sunday afternoon the 6th and next Friday evening the 12th. Check it out, and thanks to Mike Harvey for the great photos above.

  3. I have to say that, even though I enjoyed the production, I enjoyed almost as much Sid's take down of it!

  4. You look awesome with your poor dead wolfie... glad you took your curtain call on your blog!

and looking forward to your writeup on Sister Bernie and St. Francis-- she did end up getting on KRON news, just after Newsom hijacked all the live crews at his press conference.
