Beat-Up Boy Blogger

Dermatology is fast becoming a predominantly female practice, at least in San Francisco, as I discovered at UC San Francisco's Dermatology Surgery Clinic today.

A whole army of mostly young, beautiful and very smart female doctors and nurses performed a MOH's procedure on my nose and many other people's body parts all day, promising that one would not leave until "Cancer-Free, Guaranteed," at least dermatologically.

This entailed seven straight hours of various tortures under lots of local anaesthetic, a skin graft from neck to nose, and about 40 stitches. Though feeling completely brutalized, I can't thank Doctors Yu, Maldonado, and Herbst enough for their kindness and healing.

Heal rapidly, my friend. We missed you at the vigil today.

  2. Get well soon -- haven't come to this yet, but expect to. As my partner says: "how were we to know the sun would turn into our enemy in our lifetime?"

  5. Thanks, everyone. And no, I don't have any more pictures of the young man, Willie. He looked genuinely startled and not particularly pleased when I took his photo, but since we were going through the same torture, it didn't seem all that presumptuous. Plus, I handed him my camera immediately afterwards and told him, "Click away!"

    Mike,

at least you'll be easy to spot in the halls of the symphony for a little while.

I would believe that dermatology is a woman friendly specialty, being mostly a 9-5 job and making it easier to have a family and such, but my last two dermatologists were male. You're just a lucky guy.

    Get well!
