I never met a book I didn't like; when I was a kid, we weren't supposed to read at the table so at breakfast, I was reduced to reading the cereal boxes. Pathetic, isn't it?Nancy Ewarthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12116290968007398337noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11380345.post-32960054037098971142008-07-08T18:54:00.000-07:002008-07-08T18:54:00.000-07:00Boy, Nancy, you're certainly a well-read person. Never saw "Farinelli," but am waiting for the (eventual) trashy made-for-cable-TV version of "Cry to Heaven."Civic Centerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12362422142667230626noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11380345.post-40497911015195360752008-07-08T17:46:00.000-07:002008-07-08T17:46:00.000-07:00I love those two novels you mentioned; Cry to Heav...I love those two novels you mentioned; Cry to Heaven is the only decent Anne Rice cheese..er novels...(IMHO) and the Wings of Song was quite a gem in the often poorly written SF genre. I am so sorry to hear of his suicide but the Telegraph article shows how too many problems can pile up on and overwhelm vulnerable people - esp. the loss of his partner and their life savings. It's a long way from Handel - whom I also like - but we need health insurance like they have in Europe. People should not be forced to the wall over the illness of either themselves or a loved one.
Now - back to Handel. Ruth Anne Swenson is not only a magnificent singer but a real trooper. Speaking of the castrati - did you ever see the movie "Farinelli?" Gorgeous sets and singing which I understand recreated the castrati sound. The acting was pretty awful but you can't have everything.Nancy Ewarthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12116290968007398337noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11380345.post-32364185886444688702008-07-07T11:56:00.000-07:002008-07-07T11:56:00.000-07:00It is sad, my friend, also a Mike but this one fro...It is sad, my friend, also a Mike but this one from Seattle, sent me the Live Journal link. Disch doesn't really sound despondent. It's a grim read, just knowing where it ends.Your driverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06406948739451124566noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11380345.post-89639713982475216652008-07-07T11:48:00.000-07:002008-07-07T11:48:00.000-07:00Dear jon: Wow, that is some sad news. How odd that his name would come unbidden to me this morning while writing about Handel.

I just googled Tom Disch and found that he had a Livejournal blog, in which he was writing up until his death:

http://tomsdisch.livejournal.com/Civic Centerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12362422142667230626noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11380345.post-21398001289868924132008-07-07T11:34:00.000-07:002008-07-07T11:34:00.000-07:00Terrific pictures.
